Throughout 2009, Atlético Madrid had monitored Salvio’s progress and he was expected to be signed to the Spanish club in July 2009. It had also been reported that Italian and English club’s, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea were interested in him as well[2]. It was believed that Atletico, Fiorentina and Manchester United were especially chasing his signature. Lanús’s starting price for Salvio was bidding from as little as £10million[3][4].
On August 19, 2009 Salvio scored 2 goals in the first-leg of Lanus’s round-16 Copa Sudamericana match after his team were losing 1-0 to River Plate. He scored in the 80th and 90th minutes[5].
On January 12, 2010, Salvio was officially signed to Atlético Madrid for a transfer fee of €10 million.[6]
On 12th May, 2010, Salvio came on in the Europa League Final against Fulham, replacing Jose Antonio Reyes in the 76th minute
